You rang at 7 on the landline,
Every other phrase making sense.
We hadn’t talked yesterday,
I had noticed the night before
That things were less coherent,
So this morning is not a surprise
But haunting all the same.
I tried to help you to focus on the here and now,
What was around you, what was certain
In the spindrift of words you were saying,
Yet all the while wondering if this was the final curtain.
So in case this is the moment that your spirit flies
I ended with, “..love you! let’s speak later…
Goodbye!”
